City of Monroe parks

The City of Monroe provides five parks, open to the public from dawn until dusk, according to the Parks & Recreation department. Picnic shelters at certain parks can be reserved; the city asks for reservations at least two weeks in advance.

Bearskin Greenway

The Bearskin Greenway passes through the Dickerson Recreation Complex. The city has announced a further phase, funded in part by a North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant, connecting Don Griffin Park to Creft Park along with a Creft Park renovation. Check the city for construction status before planning a route.

Before you go

  • Read the general park rules published by the city.
  • Check shelter reservations if you need guaranteed space.
  • Confirm accessibility details with the city where they matter to you.
  • Union County and nearby towns operate their own parks with separate rules.

Choose a Monroe recreation outing by activity

Start with what your group intends to do, then confirm that the selected park or recreation facility supports it on your intended day. A walk, a playground visit, a shelter gathering and a registered program need different checks. Ask City of Monroe Parks & Recreation about any closures or activity restrictions rather than assuming every listed amenity is currently available. Keep an alternative plan if weather or maintenance makes your preferred activity unsuitable.

Check routes and facilities for your group

For a greenway outing, confirm the usable starting point, intended turnaround and any construction affecting the route. Do not assume an announced connection is already open. Describe access needs to the department in practical terms, including surfaces, distance, seating or restroom needs. Bring what your group requires rather than assuming supplies are provided. Check the forecast before leaving and choose a route length that leaves room to return comfortably within the applicable outdoor hours.

Handle reservations and program questions separately

A park visit does not establish that a shelter is reserved or that an indoor program accepts drop-ins. Ask the city about the application, approval process, current charges and cancellation terms for the specific facility or program. Start with Parks & Recreation information at monroenc.org and retain any confirmation you receive. County parks have a separate operator; use unioncountync.gov to verify their rules rather than applying City of Monroe instructions to every park in the area.

When contacting an official office or operator, state the exact destination, property or activity and the day or circumstances you are planning for. Ask which details are confirmed, which remain subject to change and where to find the current written instructions. Save the page link and your contact notes, then recheck time-sensitive arrangements before acting. If an answer concerns only one part of the plan, keep the remaining questions open rather than extending that answer to services, access or permissions it did not address.

Frequently asked

Are greenway expansion plans the same as an open route?
No. Confirm the current construction status and usable route with the city before planning a connection or a longer walk.
Does visiting a park reserve its shelter?
No. Ask the city about the particular shelter’s application and confirmation process. Do not organize a group around an unapproved reservation request.
Where do I check accessibility and closures?
Contact the responsible parks department with the specific facility and your needs. Use monroenc.org for City of Monroe parks and unioncountync.gov for county-operated facilities.
